Black Camel

With a very reliable recommendation from a friend, we finally tried the Black Camel, a coffee and sandwich shop located at Rosedale Station, that is only labelled with a camel. We would walk past all the time, and we regret not going in sooner considering we live just up the road.

The shop was busy and the menu was simple, but perfectly enough. A selection of sandwiches included slow roasted pulled pork and a roasted veggie sandwich, both of which we ordered.

A lovely mess.

With each sandwich served on a chewy (but not too yeasty) Portuguese bun, there is also the choice of two spreads that are all made in-house. Recommended is their Camel BBQ sauce which is the perfect balance of tangy tomato and sweet molasses, and the different mayo and pesto options were excellent, too.

For an extra couple dollars, you can order a side of coleslaw (in a nondescript Dixie cup with a fork stuck through the lid). It's like the good old days of St. Hubert's creamy coleslaw with a ton more flavor.

Sirloin with basil pesto mayo and roasted red onion is divine.

The packaging is smart - inexpensive to allow for the cost to be focused on getting excellent and good-quality food - and it's all made to-go so that you can go take it to the park across the road. With an open kitchen and bar seating, it's the perfect stop while walking the neighborhood.
