One of our favorite things about summer is everything that is free within the city of Toronto. There's always something - a tasting, a festival, a cultural or art exhibit or a concert - and it's usually something we stumble upon. There are the festivals that we plan for, and one that we aim for every Sunday night: Sunday Serenades at Mel Lastman Square.
This is our weekly date night. Summers get busy with church and camp and work and all that stuff, and this is our little night together before another crazy week begins. It's romantic and lovely. Sometimes, we'll even stop for a nightcap before heading home. It might seem a bit dorky to some, but it's a nostalgic throwback to the classics. Sometimes, we go with friends and family, but the just-us-two nights are special.
It's a free concert of jazz and swing, and the dance floor fills up with all kinds. There are swing groups, young and old, and even those who rock the floor all by themselves. The best part is that there are regulars - the ones that you say hello to and check to see if they are still there year after year.
Located at North York subway station or three stoplights north of Yonge and Sheppard, the live music starts at 7:30pm, but we like to get there early and dine al fresco just for kicks.
